"Our life is the shadow that walks always beside us" is a word string that's entered my mind reading this Tale of Dougie's Doings'. Mom being diagnosed, Dougie happening to come by, likely to be literally smelling the coffee, what's an erstwhile Hammock Hobo to do but ring the change by switching 'Temporary' for 'Permanent'.
But actually, there is no permanence in his life. The mother's condition is serious. He wants to turn temporary into permanent, but life or fate doesn't permit it.

Rich word mix, fertile short story.
Thanks so much!
I was inspired by the Tomorrow and tomorrow speech from Macbeth.
