I like working with many word counts. 50, 100, 500, 1000, 5000, 10, 000, and novel length. I usually keep mine to below 80,000 because these days, anything bigger is too hard to sell. It's funny how the scope of a story works. You start to get a sense in the conception stage of how many pages you'll need. I think it's best to write the whole thing without thinking about that, and then cut it down later if it lets you. :)
